Frequently asked questions
How much is a room?
Room rates for 2018 are $75-$95 depending on which flat / house you are allocated (See Rahiri Welcome & Information 2018 for specific details). This includes a furnished room / flat and internet. This does not include power. Rent is to be paid weekly or fortnightly by automatic payment.
Do You Offer Short-term Accommodation?
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer short-term accommodation. We are however offering summer accommodation to students studying over the December/January time period for 2017/2018.
Is there a bond to pay?
Yes. A bond of $200 is required on confirmation of your acceptance of a room at Rahiri.
What do you mean by Christian Consideration?
This is based on Luke 6:31 “Do to others as you would have them do to you”. This includes values such as honesty, respect, tolerance and basically treating others the way you would like to be treated.
Do I have to be a Christian to live at Rahiri?
No but you would need to support our vision of an environment that supports Christian values and biblical principles.
When can I move in?
On your application you will provide information regarding which course you are doing and the term of your study. We will do our best to accommodate your arrival and departure according to your study schedule and start your rent payments accordingly.
Can I have a friend stay over?
Possibly. On occasions this is possible but must be arranged with the manager before you invite your friend to stay. Because the rooms are not large and consideration to other flatmates needs to be taken into account this is not always possible but will certainly be considered on a case by case basis.
Can I choose my own flatmates?
Flatmates are arranged by the manager but requests can be suggested on application.
Can I choose which flat I would like to go in?
The manager determines the best use of the flats according to the mix of residents and vacancies. Requests can be made on application though and will be considered by the manager.
Do I have to pay over the holiday breaks or if I’m away?
Yes. Your room is your home for the academic year. It will be kept available for you and your belongings and no one else will have use of it.
Are the rooms available over the summer break (Dec / Jan)?
Sometimes there are rooms available for students doing summer school or local work. This will be determined by the combination of residents requesting summer accommodation and also our maintenance schedule. A “short term application” form is available from the Manager and can be applied for in September / October of each year.
Am I guaranteed a place in my flat in my second year of study?
We really value some “older” more experienced students staying at Rahiri who can support the new residents and help them through their first year of student life but unfortunately we cannot guarantee you a place at Rahiri for your second or subsequent years of study. We try to give priority to young adults leaving home for the first time. But if there are vacancies we will consider 1 or 2 flats be made available for older students who have shown maturity and who we believe have added to the Christian community of Rahiri. So you are welcome to apply at the end of each academic year for a place in one of these.
How do I apply?
If you think Rahiri sounds like the place for you, fill out the application form online and email or post it to us.
2018 Applications are now open. Applications are sometimes accepted during the academic year if we have vacancies. Feel free to contact us.
